LIFE+ project - Growboxx®, Zaragossa

The European Commission supported the LIFE+ research project 'The Green Deserts' in Spain with 2 million Euros. The box that is planted here, is the first version of the Growboxx plant cocoon. Back then, the box was called the Greenboxx. The soil is rocky and the temperatures rise above 40⁰C in the summer. In the winter, the trees have to face cold winds form the Pyrenees up to -10⁰C.

Within 25 years, this place will be as green as in the middle ages
Within 5 years, the box will degrade completely and function as a nutrient for the tree and shrub
After colonizing the process of natural reforestation will start
The bushes aside the trees will function as refugee place for birds
Strong winds from the Pyrenees up to -10⁰ C dry our every plant
The soil is rocky and a hard place for trees and shrubs to grow
Besides the summer, the winter will be more challanging
This is one of the most difficult places to plant a tree
The temperatures can easily rise above + 40⁰ C
Within 5 years this will be forested
There is a 95% survival rate!
We planted one tree and one shrub per Growboxx® plant cocoon
Each Growboxx® plant cocoon has 2 native species
