The only way to solve desertification is by making a profitable business model of the solution. As soon as we make money with a business model, there is money to invest in it. The possibilities with trees to get a Return on Investment are endless. Trees can solve many problems like unbinding CO2: 1,7 billion hectare of trees is able to neutralize the total annual output of CO2 caused by fossil fuels. Trees can also solve the food problem: over 1 billion people are now living with hunger and as the world population keeps on growing, food problems will also grow unless we attack them. One of the best solutions is to plant trees combating desertification and unbinding CO2 while producing wood and food. The best type of trees combining all these characteristics are trees producing nuts.
We can think of:
- Malabar chestnut
- and many others
The advantages of trees producing nuts are not only the above mentioned, but also that they in general use little water and produce a very protein rich food. So rich that people while eating them hardly need any other food: it offers most of the energy and minerals that people need for their well being.
The biggest advantage however with trees producing nuts becomes clear after the harvest. Almost all crops and especially fruits need refrigerators in order to cool and store the fruit, keeping it in good condition. However, poor people do not have capital for refrigerators and many times do not even have electricity. Nuts, contrary to other fruits, are best stored in warm, dry and well ventilated circumstances. Exactly the circumstances most of the poor in remote areas are living in.
This makes trees producing nuts one of the best and most generous solutions for many of the problems of humanity but especially for the food problem.
